As a Rabbi, much of my time is spent delivering prayer, offering insight, and helping people reach a state of serenity. Today, that space of peace is more critical than ever.
While I could lament disregarding the news, our civic duty is to remain aware of the world. Yet, I urge you not to let anxiety take over. One must process matters healthily, ensuring fear does not take over your logical and sound judgment.
Many people feel stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed today and often, most days. One way to combat these feelings and reconnect with ourselves is through meditation.
Nature meditation is a practice that involves immersing oneself in the natural world and using these methods to focus the mind and relax the body. This practice can be completed in various settings, from sitting in a quiet park, walking around a lake, or wherever you find yourself outside in the richness of nature. The primary goal of this meditation is to create a sense of calm and peace by connecting with the natural world.
When surrounded by nature, we’re often reminded of how minor our problems are in the grand scheme. Yes, today’s wars are tragic, but in our daily lives, we must champion finding the goodness we have, and such meditation can help put matters in perspective and help us become more grounded.
When out in nature, we must be present, regaling in the colors, sounds, and scents surrounding us. This type of focus can help improve our ability to concentrate, which can be helpful in all aspects of life.
So, how does one go about practicing nature meditation? There are many different techniques and approaches, but here are a few basic steps to get started:
- Find a quiet, natural setting. This could be a park, a beach, a forest, or any other place where you can be surrounded by nature.
- Find a comfortable spot to sit or lie down. Sit with your back straight and your feet on the ground if you’re sitting.
- Focus on your breath. Take a few deep breaths and then begin to focus on your breath. Try to breathe slowly and deeply and focus on the sensation of the breath moving in and out of your body.
- Observe your surroundings. Begin to observe the natural world around you. Notice the sounds, smells, and sensations of the natural world. Try to be fully present in the moment and let go of any thoughts or distractions.
- Connect with the natural world. As you observe your surroundings, try to connect with the natural world. Imagine yourself as a part of the larger ecosystem and feel the connection between yourself and the natural world.
- Stay present. Continue to focus on your breath and your surroundings. Stay fully present in the moment and let go of any distractions or thoughts that may arise.
Nature meditation is a powerful tool for reconnecting with ourselves and the natural world. Whether you want to reduce stress, improve focus, or appreciate the beauty of nature, this meditation is a great place to start. Nature offers many benefits for mind, body, and soul connection, so next time you need to embrace our lovely earthly landscape, get outside and enjoy the colors and the fresh air, breathe deeply, and treasure that time with Mother Earth.
